After a year-and-a-half's use, I've upped the rating to five stars...br /br /Sony finally got it all just about right with this styling/engineering departure, particularly after a string of other disappointing boombox products:br /br / *Most obvious is the choice of CD on the front and, in the style of their legacy portable shortwave, cassette on the back. A very smart move...literally.br / *And then they put the battery compartment on the bottom because, honestly, you're going to access the front and back (CD or cassette) more often than the batteries. Smart again!br / *Controls are on top where they're supposed to be.br / *Uses C batteries instead of D. Saves weight and size. Each battery, too, has it's own compartment should you leave one in that leaks. Hey, it happens sometimes. Since the compartment is already on the bottom, guess where the leak will go? Out!...not into the electronics. This is the clever Sony thinking I'd expect.br / *Antenna completely retracts for protection from inadvertent bending.br /br /It feels substantial and sturdy. Sound is very good for what this is. I use it in the garage and driveway to listen to older tapes and CDs. This won't replace your several-hundred-dollar Bose, but who'd want to put the Bose in the garage anyway? br /br /I also like the 60s retro styling touch of the curved handle. I just wish it was metal instead of plastic. In line with the retro style, I'd have preferred to see knobs for volume/tuning. And, I could use a slightly more readable display. br /br /For those minor, minor points, I'd give it 4.5 out of 5.

I've had this a Couple Years Now - pleinelune - Southwest US
I really like this portable Sony. I like the shape and sound, particularly for the price. I use it a lot and it's held up over two years now.

Good Sound - ecswims -
This radio/CD/cassette player is holding up in a house remodeling project. It has very good sound, even when turned up REALLY LOUD. Sometimes the CD skips or pauses but only when nearby banging or dropping of objects occurs. It would be nice if the radio tuner didn't stop at every station along the way, or maybe I just don't know how to use it yet. No manual came with it. Perfect size. It was on the expensive side, though.

Sony WM-GX221 Walkman Stereo Cassette Player/Recorder with Built-in Microphone

Sony WM-GX221 Walkman Stereo Cassette Player/Recorder with Built-in Microphone Reviews

More Picture

I got this unit about 2 weeks ago and have been very pleased with it so far.brI purchased this Cassette/recorder to make some self-study drill tapes ,so I really didn't care about the built-in stereo speakers ,the FM tuner or even if it recorded in stereo or mono.brI just wanted the ability to record lectures on standard size casette tapes using an external microphone with a walk-man sized recorder. I looked at Sony's 'Pressman' line of recorders but none of them come with both an external microphone AND a set of headphones. This was the only Walkman I could find that came with a detachable microphone AND headphones.brThe included stereo mic works very well for voice recordings and the included headphones sound very good for both voice AND music.brThe FM stereo sound is of very good quality through both the headphones and the internal stereo speakers. the Bass boost and volume limiter are nice features that I wasn't looking for but found usefull once I tried them out.brAll I needed was the ability to record lectures, since this unit provides 1/2 speed recording and playback ,to increase the amount you can fit on a single tape, I found that very handy and the recording quality of voice at half speed is excellent. pI do have a few minor complaints - The headphone jack is very touchy and causes intermittent speaker drop-outs with very little motion of the headphone plug and /or cable.. You need to secure the plug and cable to get a reliable signal on both channels if you listen while walking or jogging.brThere is no included belt holder or carrying case - something that could help alleviate the touchy headphone jack ,so if you use it while walking or jogging you are left with only two options - carry it in your hand or put it in a pocket.brThe headphones that are included have a cable attached to each ear-piece which are then joined together ,under your neck ,into a single cord. This configuration makes it impossible to keep from twisting up the cord in short-order,and it is nearly impossible to completely untwist once that has happened. A single cable configuration would be simpler and better.pYou will probably want to get an AC/DC adapter. Try ...first - they have an appropriate 3Vdc adapter for about $...Sony wants $...for theirs.brOverall this is a good recorder and Player with all the features you need plus some nice extras. If you are considering a Sony Pressman - take at look at the WM-GX221 it might be just what you are looking for!

Sony WM-GX221 Walkman Stereo Cassette Player/Recorder with Built-in Microphone Feature

  • Records and plays back full size stereo cassettes
  • Integrated AM/FM analog tuner
  • Built-in microphone for convenient voice recording and stereo speakers (140MW + 140MW) for playback
  • Double recording time setting
  • Cue and Review
This compact Sony Walkman receives FM/AM stereo and plays and records cassette tapes. With its built-in microphone and built-in speaker, there are no additional hardware requirements necessary to play and record music or voice. The stereo speakers (140MW + 140MW) produce a rich, complete sound. While it is possible to record via the Walkman's built-in microphone, this recording will not be in stereo. If you want the full sound of stereo captures, simply attach the included stereo microphone via the external microphone input jack. With the double recording time option, you can record a standard cassette at either normal speed or half the normal speed, thus doubling your recording time. This is a nice feature for those encountering long lectures or dictation sessions. The cue and review feature provides sound to be heard as the fast forward and rewind modes are used, a helpful tool when searching for specific passages. Sony has incorporated an advanced anti-rolling mechanism to maximize sound reproduction even while the Walkman is jostled and bumped. p The Walkman's stereo speakers produce quality sound. The player's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) maintains an even volume level, guarding against unintended level increases; it also normalizes the output of musical passages that vary widely in level. The tape deck's one-way tape playback lets you enjoy uninterrupted listening to one complete cassette side. For those who enjoy deep bass sound, Sony's Mega Bass system will surely impress, providing a distinctly rich sound, even though earphones. p The Walkman runs on 2 AA batteries and will last approximately 31.5 hours in tape playback mode and up to forty hours in FM reception mode. To help with battery usage, Sony has installed an automatic shut-off feature on the playback mode to extend battery and mechanical usage. The Walkman comes with the MDR-E808LP stereo headphones and a stereo microphone. pbWhat's in the Box/bbr Sony WM-GX221 Walkman, stereo headphones, stereo microphone, ninety day warranty and a user's manual. Records in stereo on full size cassettes / Internal external microphones included / Integrated speaker / Analog AM-FM tuner

We Need Compact Devices Like This Walkman For Playing Analog Media - John A. Mozzer - Los Angeles, California
Believe it or not, I'm using this Walkman to digitize my collection of standard analog audio cassette tapes. It fits neatly on my desk next to my MacBook Pro laptop computer. I'm using its headphone jack to plug it straight into my MacBook Pro's audio in port, and using GarageBand for digitizing and creating audio digital files.br /br /I also use its AM/FM radio from time to time.br /br /I'd like to get another one, a spare. I wish it was still available.

A decent product with one serious flaw - Michael Greene - Lanham, Maryland USA
This product description includes the following: "The cue and review feature provides sound to be heard as the fast forward and rewind modes are used, a helpful tool when searching for specific passages." Unfortunately there is no cue and review feature. There are buttons labeled cue and review, but they do nothing but fast forward and rewind, respectively. A call to SONY confirmed the fact: the agent said, "on this product cue means fast forward." Later she admitted that cue usually has another meaning. This makes the recording device nearly unusable for many purposes. br / Otherwise, the recorder works pretty well for the price. The radio is less satisfactory, and the earphones must be plugged in to provide an aerial, even when the speakers are used.

TAPE2USB Cassette To PC Recorder

TAPE2USB Cassette To PC Recorder Reviews

More Picture

I use the Grace Digital Audio Tape2USB specifically to record audio to cassette tapes. Upon reading reviews of this product, none of them stated how well this tape deck handled this task. I can attest that the product delivers sufficient sound transfer to tape. Although my older kenwood dual-deck tape recorder was significantly better, for the money you can still make decent mix tapes for your friends and family. Enough bass to get by with. Not overly tinny. Pretty much all I asked for in this product. I also use this product to make live recordings of band practices. All and all, I say you get what you pay for. It also hooks up to your pc really easily, although I did not test the usb function.

TAPE2USB Cassette To PC Recorder Feature

Audacity software for PC and Mac included to edit recordings. PAfter you download your music to your PC or Mac you can listen to your songs via any media player (including iTunes or Windows media player), upload them to your iPod or even burn your music to a CD. Piece of Crap - A. Berge -
Let my start by saying that the USB sounded like crap from day one. From that end, it was a complete waste because that was the entire point of the purchase. I could have bought a generic analog deck that pluged into my sound card that would have been cheaper and sounded a lot better. I managed to back up two tapes before noticing the low electrical hum, that has been plaguing me from start, was now a loud electrical hum. I know it isn't from my tapes because you can hear it with the play button pushed down, on pause, or with no tape inside the deck. Now it is just a paperweight, because the hum transhers to my recordings and Audacity can't filter it out. Just go to craigs list and buy a tape deck or even an old boom box that has an Audio output. Get a audio cable from Best Buy or Radio Shack plug that into your computer instead of this USB garbage.
